Identity is an exploration of non-traditional portraiture and expression. People are often better defined by their interests than their appearance, so Oliver choose to not present the viewer with what the subject actually looks like, and leave them with only a silhouette instead. This silhouette then frames a part of who that person really is.
Oliver would approach each subject and have them write about something that they thought was a defining feature of themselves. This writing is added to each imaged over the silhouette, allowing the subjects to further explain themselves directly to a viewer with all the character of their own unique handwriting.
